The Space Age came to the bar in 1968 — and it looked like this. This Walker's Bourbon decanter is a textbook example of the atomic starburst aesthetic that defined American design in the late 1950s and 1960s: bold, optimistic, and utterly of its moment. Indented atomic stars ring the entire base, and the octagonal stopper features its own atomic star dead center. Even the bottom of the bottle gets one — plus the Owens-Illinois Glass mark embossed alongside "Liquor Bottle, 65 I 68 5."
The shape is wonderfully Mid-Century: compact and substantial, with a satisfying weight in the hand. Four pour spouts at the collar make it as functional as it is decorative. Originally sold with Walker's Bourbon by Hiram Walker & Sons — a brand now discontinued, which makes this bottle a genuine piece of American spirits history.
Note: small chip on one corner of the stopper and the cork shows some wear — priced accordingly.
A fantastic gift for the dad who loves Mid-Century Modern design, atomic age collectibles, or barware with a story.
Hiram Walker & Sons was founded in 1858 in Detroit, Michigan by Hiram Walker, a grocer and distiller who eventually moved his operations across the border to Walkerville, Ontario to take advantage of lower grain prices and taxes. The company grew into one of the largest distilling operations in North America, producing brands including Canadian Club. Walker's Bourbon was one of their American expressions, now long discontinued.
Owens-Illinois Glass Company, founded in 1929 in Toledo, Ohio, was the world's largest glass container manufacturer for much of the 20th century. Their embossed bottle marks are a favorite detail among vintage bottle collectors.
